APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Thank you for considering the iCAN program. iCAN is an innovative program designed to prepare
high school students for college. It is a collaborative effort between Antelope Valley College,
California State University Bakersfield and California State University Fresno. Before completing
the application, we request that you give careful consideration to the information below to
determine if the iCAN program is suitable for you and your child. In completing the application,
please make special note of the expectations you and your child will be agreeing to if he or she is
accepted for the iCAN program.
What is iCAN?
iCAN is an opportunity for high school students as well as their parents to participate in a series of
activities that will help the student not only get into college but also be successful once he or she
gets there! A carefully selected group of 50 high school students will be invited to participate in
academic, cultural enrichment, career exploration and planning, and team building experiences.
The iCAN team will work with each student beginning the summer of 2008 until the student has
been admitted to a university and feels confident of success.
What will the iCAN participants do?
1. Sophomore to Junior
year:
Successful applicants and interested parents will participate in asummer conference that will provide an overview of the college experience and answer
questions such as
·
“What value would a college education be to me?”·
“How can I afford college?”·
“What is the college experience like?”·
“What kinds of jobs can I get when I get out of college?”During the student’s junior year, he or she will be invited to participate in various educational
and cultural opportunities including field trips. Additionally, students may come to an after
school Academic Academy, an intensive program aimed to identify students’ current skill levels
and develop study strategies based on individual need. Homework help and other tutorial
assistance may be provided.
2. JuniortoSenior
Students Summer Support:
iCAN will continue to offer Academic Academy and teambuilding field trips, while expanding on
the scope of the activities. Field trips to research labs and other hightech worksites will be
added during this summer before the students’ senior year.
3. Senior to College
Summer Support:
During the most important transition, where students enter college, the Academic Academy of
the previous two years will be combined with a Week of Welcome for those students who
choose to attend Antelope Valley College, where the new college students will be introduced to
college life: activities, support services, and resource availability. Students will have the
opportunity to get involved with existing clubs or create student clubs based on their personal,
professional, or cultural interests. They will be introduced to the Associated Student
Organization (ASO) and encouraged to participate in the senator elections.
4. College Freshman Support:
For students who enroll at Antelope Valley College, the program will continue with all of the
previous support and activities, but will be specifically targeted to college coursework for
transfer in the targeted programs. Students will participate in two orientation sessions each
semester.
5. College Sophomore Support:
During their sophomore year students will work closely with the AVC and CSU transfer
counselors to make sure they meet all the requirements for transfer. Visits to other campuses
will also be arranged. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in summer
internships and other work experience projects with local industry.
